History of the pantry:  The Ritenour Co-Care Food Pantry began in a janitor’s closet of Overland Presbyterian Church, which later became New Horizon’s Presbyterian Church, on Everman Ave.  As the pantry grew to meet the need of the community, a new home was sought that would house the large pallets of food received twice weekly.  The move happened on May 14, 2016 with 70 volunteers from Ritenour School District and the city of Overland helping to move all the shelves, refrigerators, and freezers to the new location at 9516 Rear Lackland Rd, two blocks away.  The pantry now offers food by choice to over 2,500 people (750 families) a month who live within the Ritenour School District.  We are open Monday through Friday 9am-1pm. By appointment only.  We are also serving the waiting list once a month with food from the St. Louis Area Food Bank called Mobile Market, so they get food before they are in the pantry system.

What it takes to make all of this work:

*We need volunteers on a regular basis for these distributions and also for the large food deliveries Monday and Friday from 11-3. Just call the pantry line and leave your name and phone number and we will make sure you get oriented to help.  If you visit our "Get Involved" page, you can download our Volunteer Application and Confidentiality Agreement prior to your first day of volunteering.  You can also visit http://www.volunteermatch.org/search/org797457.jsp and check out the volunteer opportunities we have available.

*We need donations of money to help us pay our rent and utility costs now that we are on our own with these bills. It is estimated that we use about $3,000 a month just for our expenses of running this community pantry. Regular donations are a blessing in meeting that need. We specialize in fresh and frozen food, whereas most pantries do not have refrigerated space for produce and meat like we do. But it comes with a cost to keep products cool or frozen until they are distributed.

*We also appreciate donations of items like feminine hygiene items, other personal care items, laundry detergent, soup, canned meats, cereal, canned fruit, peanut butter.

***We accept donations of food or money at any time. Make a check out to Ritenour Co-Care Food Pantry and send it to PO Box 142542, Overland MO 63114. To drop off food you may call the pantry number at 314-493-6028 to arrange a time.***

It takes a whole community to do this:

Since the Ritenour Co-Care Food Pantry has become more of a community pantry in the last year, it has grown in the support that we receive from the whole community.  We are a member of the Overland Business Association and participate in meetings and activities.  The Overland Rotary works in the pantry on the third Wednesday at 7am-8am and does a marvelous job each month.  Girl Scouts help sort and organize items.  Several members of the Ritenour School District have continued to volunteer weekly with our distributions.  Two disabled groups work to sort and organize items weekly.  We provide community service to anyone who wants or needs it, giving a formalized statement of service rendered when the needed or wanted time is over.  We have several churches who have supported us over the years: Our lady of Presentation, Calvary United Christian Church, Overland Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and New Horizons Presbyterian Church supports us in printing needs.  Without the support of all these groups and the growing number of individual volunteers (many who give financially too), we could not survive.

We thank the area police departments (Charlack, St. John, St. Ann, Berkeley, Overland) and Ritenour School District for our collaboration in the annual Christmas can drive in which we help to facilitate the space, while the school gathers the canned goods.  After the baskets are given to needy families in the cites surrounding our community, the pantry gets the left over cans.  Last year the total was 25,000 cans which lasted about 5 months in the pantry

Another collaboration that has popped up lately is a bookstore of free books replenished weekly by a RHS teacher who wants people to read! We also have art kits for a community effort to spread art in Overland.
